| I rarely try new things, normally stick with the tried and true. | |

| Well I don't have any new equipment, but I'm using the circle hooks a lot different now. I have heard for the past few years that you should fish a circle hook using a tight line and let the fish come up hard against it and he will hook himself. I have had a hard time doing that. I just HAVE to set the hook. But on the other hand I have to admit that we have not had as high a hook up ratio that we would like. We have fished a slack line for the past couple of years. What I mean by this is that we would get our bait out there and then lay the rod down with a bunch of slack in our line and leave the reel in free spool and then let the fish move off with it. After he's taken out 8 or 10 feet of line, we put it to him. What happens a lot of the time is that they will pick up the bait and start to move off with it and when they have taken out several feet, we pick up the rod and get ready to set the hook on them and they are gone. I got tired of this the last time we were out and decided I was going to try fishing the way some of these guy's have said to do it with circle hooks. I got the bait out there and took all the slack out of my line and when the rod went down and stayed down for several seconds (maybe 15 to 20 seconds) then I would pick it up and lightly set the hook. Out success ratio increased dramatically. So I guess they were right after all. It seems that if you leave things alone and don't touch the outfit, those fish WILL hook themselves given the chance to do it. Jim | |
