| I fished Smallmouths on the John Day River here in Oregon for close to twenty years. My partner and I would go every year. A couple of years we did the trip twice. We would drift the river with our Driftboats for 50 miles and camp somewhere on the river every night. We started at a little place Called Service Creek, and ended our trip at another place Called Clarno. We usually took other people along with us. About 12 years into doing this we changed and started drifting the river from Clarno and going down to Cottonwood Canyon Bridge. That drift was seventy miles long. We would take ten days to do it. The Smallmouth fishing was incredible. Most years we would catch a number of tagged fish and if you turned in the information to the Department of Fish and Game with the numbers off of the tags, they would send you a check for $10.00. I think I made $40.00 one year. We never kept track of how many fish we caught but it was in the many hundreds. One year Russ and I did the trip by ourselves with only one boat. We would switch off rowing every two hours. That year, just him and I caught just under 3,000 bass. When we did these trips we took enough groceries for 5 nights on the river. The other 5 nights we would eat fish. We would each keep one or two good sized bass, depending on how hungry we were that day, and those would be our dinner. All the rest of the fish were released. I remember the last year we drifted the river, my left arm had tendonitis so bad from catching that many fish, that I just rowed the boat the last two days and let Russ do the fishing. I'll try to find some of the pictures we took over the years and post some of them on here in the next couple of days. The scenery was spectacular. It was like being on another planet most of the time. Jim | |
