I don't know if everyone does it this way or not. I was raised up in a tobacco patch. Back then we didn't have all the modern chemicals and equipment. Lots of hands on hard labor.
When applying sevin dust to control the insects and worms, we would take a tin can and use a nail to punch holes in the bottom. Don't drive the nail all the way through. Just barely break through leaving a tiny hole. Make lots of holes in the bottom of the can and then you can fill the can with sevin dust and hold it over the plant and give it a shake. When we used this method on tobacco, we attached a stick about 3' long to the can for a handle. That way, we could just walk by the small plants and give a shake without having to bend over.

The only thing that i ever dusted was my cabbage but if i can avoid it i do but that is just because i donate food to the nursing home and don't want know one getting sick in any way. Other wise we have also used it on the green beans a couple years ago and i worked good, thank you Grumpy for the idea i may just have to give that a try on some of my other plants that we eat here at the farm.

We put it in a old sock and shook it as we went along.

Yes, I grew up with my mom also using Sevin Dust for the insects on the plants. Worked very well. I don't use it unless I have to, but in most cases, I will have to use it on the tomatoes, beans and cabbage plants.
