PARK RAPIDS, Minn. (AP) - Three teens have been fined $1,600 and placed on probation after pleading guilty to killing 109 American Coots.
Coots are migratory game birds protected by both state and federal law.
After receiving a phone call tip, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer Paul Parthun found 109 dead coots from the Hart Lake near Laporte in northwestern Minnesota last October.
Often mistaken for a duck, the American Coot has a black body with a white chicken-like beak.
The DNR announced the sentences Friday of the two teen brothers from Laporte and another juvenile teen from Akeley.
