– A new report says Ohio lost 262,383 jobs since 2000, which is about 5 percent of its work force. The majority of those were manufacturing jobs, with 218,453 factory positions disappearing since 2001, or 23 percent of the state’s total seven years ago. Meanwhile the average Ohio worker is making 1 percent less than in 2000 even without considering inflation. Ohio’s unemployment rate of 7.8 percent is the highest in the state in more than 20 years. Among Ohio’s 20 largest cities, Toledo's jobless rate of 10.7 percent was last month's highest. Area Ohio County unemployment rates were Defiance County with 9.6%, Henry County with 10.2%, Fulton at 10.3%, and Williams County with a 11.2% jobless rate. Indiana Workforce Development reports Steuben County's unemployment rate went up to 11.3% in December. That means more than one out of ten persons in Steuben County who is able to work can not find a job. Steuben County now has the eighth highest unemployment rate in the state of Indiana.
