A Long Island man with a history of DWI rented a car to avoid driving his own - which is outfitted with a court-ordered Breathalyzer - but was busted for driving drunk again when he smashed into a pole today, police said.
Marvin Rice Jr., 27, of Shirley, totaled a brand-new Volkswagen Jetta when he slammed into a pole in Brentwood just before 6 a.m., according to cops.
"The man was driving a rental car because his personal vehicle is equipped with a court-mandated anti-drinking-and-driving device" as part of Suffolk County's Interlock Ignition program, according a police spokesman.
It requires drivers to submit to a breath test before the car ignition starts.
Rice, who was alone, had to be cut out of the smashed-up rental.
He broke both legs and his pelvis and was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center for surgery.
He was charged with DWI.
