| Those were some really interesting pictures. Been there and almost done that. When I was pilot on that 90 foot fireboat, they wanted us to go upsteam to downtown Portland and push some of the logs off of the Steel Bridge. It was the winter of 1996 and the rivers were all flooding. The current coming down the Wilamette River was probably 7 or 8 knots. That's fast for a boat that size. I took one look and told my Lieutenant that there was no way in the world I was going to try to do the job they wanted us to. I said if we get up against that bridge, it's all over. I refused a direct order, but that Fireboat is still floating and we are still alive to talk about it. This guy should have never gotten that close to that bridge without it first being opened all the way. Amazing outcome, and that is one lucky crew. Jim | |
