Document says Kannapolis man arrested in May 31 sexual assault wanted to have sex with his wife and another man.
COLUMBIA, S.C. - A court document released Wednesday says the Kannapolis husband accused of using Craigslist to arrange his wife's rape told her not to call police and to take a shower after the attack.
The search warrant also says that during the May 31 sexual assault in the married couple's bedroom, the intruder set his weapon down and the wife "was able to get the knife and throw it off the opposite side of the bed near her husband."
Kannapolis Police say it's possible the attacker, who has not yet been arrested or identified, might have thought he was just playing a part in a sexual fantasy with a willing participant.
The wife called 911 minutes after the attack. She and an investigator went to a hospital so evidence could be collected.
After a three-day investigation, the husband was arrested and charged with first degree rape and several other crimes, even though he did not physically take part in the assault, according to police. He was under a $200,000 bond in Cabarrus County jail.
Police say they found incriminating e-mails and became suspicious of the husband because his story conflicted with his wife's version and because there was no forced entry into the home.
During the investigation, a judge approved a search warrant for the husband's desktop computer, laptop and cell phone. The written affidavit for the warrant was released Wednesday by court officials.
According to the court document, the wife and her husband were in bed and confronted at about 2 a.m. by a 6-foot-tall assailant wielding a knife. He demanded $3,000. The wife said she had only a few hundred dollars.
"... the suspect said that was not enough and that he would get the money from her one way or the other," the investigating officer wrote in the affidavit. "(The victim) stated that she was afraid for her children who were in another room directly across from her room."
At the hospital, the victim described the events to the investigator.
"She also stated that her husband's sexual fantasy is having sex with her and another male," the investigator wrote in the affidavit. "She said that she has checked her husband's e-mail in the past and found e-mail communication where he was requesting someone to please her."
The husband was convicted last year of indecent exposure in Chesterfield County, Va., according to court documents. He was accused by police of exposing himself twice to a woman delivering pizza to his hotel room.
The Observer doesn't identify the victims of sexual assaults, and hasn't named the husband charged in the assault to protect his wife's identity.
San Francisco-based Craigslist has been under scrutiny after reports nationally of violent crime following contacts made through Craigslist, which features free online classified ads grouped by city and state. Craigslist recently pledged to eliminate its "erotic services" category and vet submissions to a new "adult services" section before posting them.
Police have said Craigslist is helping with the investigation.
A statement in an e-mail last week from company spokeswoman Susan MacTavish Best said: "We share the public's horror that such a crime was committed, and our heart goes out to the victim."
