| BROOKFIELD, Ill., March 27 (UPI) -- A 48-year-old female gorilla that has been at the Brookfield Zoo in Illinois for 46 years has died, officials said. The primate, named Alpha, was brought to the zoo from Africa. She was euthanized Thursday night after weeks of failing health related to kidney failure, zoo officials said. The Chicago Tribune reported Friday that the wild-born primate survived to become one of the oldest lowland gorillas in captivity. For years, Alpha was the matriarch of the zoo's gorilla family, the newspaper said.  | |
