| mike there are different levels of lok tite you can use or just put some silicone on the threads and install the nut! try it on one and see if it will be too hard for her. My wife can't do it at all so I put them on with an impact . | |

| If it all fails, just put them on tite then drill a hole threw each one and insert a kotter key. | |

| There must be something else wrong. Don't know the solution. Perhaps the bevel on the nuts are wrong or worn. Perhaps the bevel on the wheel are not correct or worn. I would inspect them both very carefully maybe even under a 10X glass. Maybe just some new lug nuts would work. Something is not right here. If you have a torque wrench use it. | |

| Another thought; perhaps the lug nuts are bottoming out on the brake housing or whatever it is called. Maybe all you need is to grind a little off the bottom of the lugnuts so that they contact the tire wheel before bottoming out. I like this idea. | |

| Put some plumbers white tape, the kind you use on water lines, this will keep them snug and keep them from backing off" hope this helps" | |

| Lug nuts are cheap unless you have custom wheels. The studs are cheap too . Replace them if there's a problem keeping them tight. I wouldn't put anything on them. | |

| Mike, Put in new studs, and use heavy duty lug nuts, they are bigger in diameter and have a larger area of contact on the wheel (like nascar uses) that works well on warn or older wheels.........hope this helps.......... | |

| The lug nuts should lock on the taper of the hole if they keep working free something wrong with the nut or the rim they should not bottom out on the brake hub but on the taper because the taper is what locks it. | |

| Correct Ace; that is what I was trying to say but you said it better.
Early last fall I got some new tires for my Silverado here locally in our small town. Then I drove it to Michigan on that three week deer hunt. While up there I needed an oil change before coming home and so I got the tires (actually wheels if we want to get technical) rotated. I went to a Chevy dealer up there. They had a heck of a time removing the lug nuts as they were over torqued and they complained about it. They correctly torqued the nuts like they should have been done.
I do have three torque wrenches of different sizes. The largest one I occasionally use on lug nuts and my mower blades. And I have tested this on on a torque wrench test stand so I do know that it is correct.
The above is just some tid bit information as long as we are on lug nuts.

Mike I will caution you not to use teflon tape on the lugs. Teflon tape is a lubricant that allows plumbers to tighten fittings tigher when assembling waterlines and fittings. Sometimes called seal tape by people who do not understand its purpose. I do think you have a problem that need attention if you plan on driving that truck. I am betting on worn thread on the lugs. Pull the hubs and drive in new lugs. If you decide on taking it to a shop I would bet the brake guys would be the best price. They remove hubs on a regular basis and have jacks and tools to do so quickly and affordably.

| I just had new brakes and front end alignment done on mine Mike to the tune of $614.90. I had to buy two new front rotors though and they are about $150.00 each. Jim | |

| Ouch Jim, I hate the thought of it. My Silverado is of 2001 vindage with 50K miles. Never had anything done with the brakes. I might add though that I have used it mostly country driving and I do not follow anyone so close that I have to keep doing the brake thing. I detest that. We anticipate as we are driving as do you people here on this site. You have commen sense otherwise you would not be here.
Anyway ouch! Some day I probably will have to get that done. As it is is an old truck I replaced all the fluids in that vehicle because it is so old (within the last 5 months). It is a 4-wheeler so much had to be done and I wanted it done.
I have had no complants on the brakes when I get it worked on. Also a few months ago when I got new tires I inspected the brakes my self. As I am no expert, just a long life guy, I thought the brakes looked all right for now.
Just a final Ouch! bye | |
