Yep, light tackle is a blast to catch bigger fish! Great job guys! Keep up the good work on the fishing! I think Jamie and I are going to go fishing some where Monday morning before it gets too hot out. That is a good eating size fish right there, Willy!

Thanks Mike and Peg. I love catching fish on the rod. It is supposed to be heavy action but it at the most a medium. I will try to get a picture of it bent over and show you. Good luck Peg.

Thanks Andrew. I forgot about the doughball I had in the fridge outside. I took it over to Danny's after school today. I was fishing about 4-5 feet off the bank just a couple inches off the bottom. The first bite I had pulled the cork just under the surface and started swiming off taking slack. I knew I had slack and was expecting a big fish so I got off my bucket, took a few steps, and swung. It was a little channel. Took him off the hook and pitched right back out there. Exact same thing happened again but this time the fish didn't come right out. It was a 6-7 pounder. Pitched back out there again and caught 2 more little channels. After that the bite died down a little so I tried some chicken. I had one that kept pumping the cork and when it started walking of I set the hook. I kind if stuck when I set the hook and knew it was a turtle. Good eating size at around 3-4 pounds. I was really hot so I came home. Pretty nice 20 minutes of fishing.

WOW!~! That was a nice 20 minutes of fishing, Willy! Thanks for the report!~! We never did go out on Monday morning as it was too hot. We've had heat indexes all week so far.

Re: 09 fishing

Post by catfish willy on Wed Aug 12, 2009 8:01 pm

Thanks Greg and Peg. I went again today after school (big surprise huh?). As soon as I got there I caught a 5-6 inch bluegill and casted it out on my 6500. As I was sinking the line the cork went under and at first I thought it was the bluegill but when it stayed under for a couple seconds and started taking slack I swung Expecting the flathead. As usual I was wrong. Sorry about the pics but I was fishing in the shade and the flash reflected on the fish.

I tried to catch some more bluegill but couldn't so I just started trying to catch some channels. I tried the same thing as yesterday fishing just a few inches off the bottom but this time I was in a little over 8 feet of water. I was using shrimp and I thought bluegill kept picking at it but I set the hook when it was walking off and even then I thought it was a bluegill.

After catching that channel I am starting to think that not all of the fish I was missing had scales. I casted right back out there and it didn't take long for another little channel to bite

I didn't have another bite for about another 45 minutes so I left. Before I did I took some pictures to show just how mismarked that rod was. The american flag rod is rated a medium and the other one is rated heavy.

Not much difference is there? I ordered the camo rod for a big fish rod to put my 7000i on but trying to cast a big cork or a 2-4 ounce sinker and a big bluegill on it wasn't working out very well. The rod would double over before the bait would ever move so I put my 7000i on a night stick and put my 6600d6 on the camo rod.

Looks like they were mismarked or you had one heck of a fish on the camo pole LOL...

Re: 09 fishing

Post by catfish willy on Thu Aug 13, 2009 8:07 pm

Thanks Andrew. That is the first rod I have ever had that badly mismarked. I have had a few the were rated medium heavy that I thought were more of a heavy action. I went to the old rock quarry and caught half a dozen bluegill in no time and then went over to Danny's pond to use them. I casted one rod out in the middle about 6 foot deep, I casted one up by the dam about 5 feet deep, and I casted one up in the shallow end a couple feet deep. The rod in the middle was the first to get bit. It went under and stayed under but never moved. I set the hook and it was another one of those anoying fish with scales.

I put another bluegill on there and casted it back where I caught the bass. While I was watching my 7000 I seen my americat rod jump towards the water. I didn't wait to see if the bobber was still under, I just got my hands on the rod and set the hook. To my surprise the fish kept swimming to the right and I couldn't turn the fish's head for nothing. It was fighting alot harder than most of the channels do and it wasn't just because it was a lighter action rod. When I was about convinced I had the flathead I seen the fish when it came up to the top of the water. It appeared to be tail wrapped until it took another run which a tail wrapped fish can not do. Then I knew why this fish was fighting so much harder then it should've. It was one of the nicer channels.

Look where the fish was hooked.

Re: 09 fishing

Post by catfish willy on Fri Aug 14, 2009 8:29 pm

Thanks Peg. I went over to Danny's again this afternoon while dad and Paul went to bush hog, set out some corn and cameras, that kind of stuff at Pauls farm. Forgot the camera at home and dad had the four wheeler so I didn't walk home and get it. I missed a few that when I would set the hook I would feel nothing, not even the bait and bobber. They all came back towards me into deeper water. Once I noticed that I slipped the bobber stop up to about 6 foot deep and casted right in the middle and waited. It didn't take long and the bobber gently slip under and I set the hook. When I set the hook I wasn't expecting much judging by how soft it bit. Once that hook drove through it's lip I changed my mind. It was another nicer channel a little smaller than the one in my last report. After that I didn't keep count of all the little ones I caught but there must of been 6-8 little channels and a couple bluegill bigger than my hand.

Re: 09 fishing

Post by catfish willy on Sat Aug 15, 2009 8:32 pm

Thanks Peg. Sure can't complain can I? I was over there tonight an only planned on being there for 45 minutes maybe an hour tops. As I was getting ready to leave I noticed my bobber up by the dam was gone so I set the hook. I was fishing about a 1 1/2 feet deep in 4-5 feet of water. The fish ran straight towards me when I set the hook. Because of that it didn't fight long but it wasn't a very big fish either.

After that I kept missing fish that would pull the cork under for a couple seconds and let up about time you went to set the hook until right before dark. Even when I would be holding the rod waiting on them. When I did catch one though he was a monster.

A little after that something knocked a bunch of slack in my bottom pole and then started taking it out really slowly. It was hooked deep but I didn't think it would hurt it so I just cut the leader and put him back.

After that I kept missing and catching the little channels until it got to dark to see my cork.

No, you sure can't complain, Willy. Great pics and report! It's been too hot here to fish lately. Hopefully when it starts cooling down a bit we can get out there and get some lines wet and hopefully catch some good fish.

Thanks Peg. I can't wait until this fall when it is comfortable all day. I wonder why I have been catching alot more smaller channels? Not just the little bitty ones but the 2 and 3 pounders too.

Re: 09 fishing

Post by catfish willy on Sun Aug 16, 2009 5:54 pm

Greg, I think I have only had 3 or 4 trips this year without catching atleast one fish. They have been biting consistently but I wish I could get into some bigger fish. That would be pretty bad if the same 15ish pound flathead was my biggest fish for the year 2 years in a row. I went to the old rock quarry today and when I got there I saw this little guy in some tree roots.

I got him out and let him go away from the roots.

I was only there for a few minutes and Trent came over on his Dune Buggy and wanted to go riding. I thought he ment a trip back on his farm and back. Instead we rode almost all day. When we got done I cleaned a turtle that I will post step by steps pics later tonight.

Re: 09 fishing

Post by catfish willy on Sun Aug 16, 2009 8:17 pm

Yep they are. I kind of got spoiled when I lived just a few hundred yards from the Ohio River and had a buddy that had a little shack right on the water. 20 pounders were pretty common then. The fish were biting good tonight right before dark. I rode over to Trent's pond and caught a dozen little rockbass about an inch and a half long. I took them back to Danny's and used them for bait. I was fishing in the deepest part of the pond on bottom and I seen the rod barely tap. I got it out of the holder. I was about to put it back when one hammered it and I set the hook. This fish was pretty skinny.

I put another mini gill on and casted back out there. A little later Trent hooked one. This one was a little chunkier but it wasn't as good as we thought it was. It fought like crazy.

He left a little after that and after it got dark I had another hit on my bottom pole. This one was pretty good.

That fish fought hard too but it was on a 5000 spooled with 15 pound big game on a 7 1/2 foot bass rod.
