Two weeks ago last night ridge and I went to our little hole on the river and had a great night, brought home over 20lbs of cats. The biggest one was around 8lbs and the second one I landed. I had three poles in and had cats on them almost simulstanely, was a lot of fun. They were caught on cut sucker and cut chub. Last week all we caught was three little bluegill and nothing else. We went out again last night and ridge got a little white belly channel and I got one about 11/2 lbs and that was ...

Went out for about 3hrs yesterday and only caught 1 channel about 2lbs and one leatherback turtle about 6 inches across, but had a good time fishing. I was using shrimp, bums me out the dang turtles like the shrimp too. I quit using chicken liver due to tired of catching the friggin turtles but guess they like whatever your gonna throw out. I tried some of my stink bait also but had no takers on it, which don't suprise me, but the turtles don't like it so that's a plus.

Late spring could play into opening-day walleye plans.

Late spring. Early opener.

That’s the scenario facing Minnesota anglers, especially in the north, when the grand quest for the state’s most sought-after fish resumes Saturday.

Minnesota’s walleye season — without a doubt the state’s largest outdoors get-together — opens two Saturdays before Memorial Day weekend. And this year, thanks to the way the calendar turns, the opener is about as early as it can be.

It’s been a strange spawning run for North Shore steelhead.

The Lester River and Knife River each have had a couple of good days when water temperatures rose into the 40s, but cold water has made fishing generally slow.

A Department of Natural Resources angling survey clerk talked to 10 anglers on the Knife River who had caught fish on Tuesday. That same day, DNR fisheries workers found 14 steelhead waiting for them in the Knife River trap, where fish are detained on their way upstream.

Spring took a step backward this week when another snowstorm hit the Bemidji area. After heavy rain eroded the ice on many lakes last week, the new snow covered up many of the potential hazards on the ice, making them more difficult for anglers to see.

There is still more than two feet of ice in many areas, but the ice is not consistent because of the rain and runoff of melting snow.

Anglers should be very cautious when traveling on the lakes, especially near shore and in areas where ...

Spring arrived this morning at 6:44 a.m. in the Northern Hemisphere.

Most of the snow cover on the lakes melted this past week, which left the surface of the ice wet and covered with slush.

The accesses on most lakes are in rough shape from vehicle traffic and runoff from melting snow. Accesses on the west and north sides of lakes get more sun than accesses on the south and east sides of lakes, which breaks those accesses up more quickly.

Although there is still more than two feet ...

I spent the day over at my cousins fishing some farm ponds. I caught 8 bass and missed two. Jake caught two and missed one. The 8 I caught were between 4 and 8 inches and so were Jake's. The one I missed was real nice. They were grabbing it and just sitting there with it. I set the hook and it peeled a little drag before the hook pulled. Little treble hooks and big bass don't really go together. Later I was casting the banks with a spoon and caught this big limb on 8 pound test. High light of ...

Been heading out every day after work and doing really good on the stripers trolling umbrella rigs getting about 5 to 8 from 5 to 12lbs each time in about 2 hours. Thursday we trolled a rig on the way to the boat ramp to get one or two more before the boat came out for upgrades. Took about 10 minutes and got a bass a striper and missed one more before we got to the ramp. With the new electronics the fishing reports should be a lot better now ;-)

There was a coast gurad ice breaker that went threw the ice from the maumee area to point pellee last week about 7mi. out. This broke the ice up giving it room to move. We've gone out many times this year in a south wind so no one thought any thing of it because most didn't even know it went through.

The warm weather, water on the ice, board bridges, and cracks had nothing to do with why this happened. It was the wind and the ice having a place to move. Every year we fish the same thing ...

Lat Friday (the day after Thanksgiving) I drove up to Alex to do some shopping. (Yes, Black Friday, pretty dumb!)

I drove by Lake Reno and noticed about 2 people out on the lake fishing (which to me is pretty dumb as the ice cannot be all that safe as of yet)

I was in Alex about 3 hours and when I drove back, there were probably 100 people out there ice fishing. So I expect the crappies,or sunnies were probably biting. Ther word got out really quick. Me, I would choose to wait a few weeks.

Walleye action has improved on_Green Lake in 25 to 35 feet, on Eagle Lake in 10 to 15 feet, and at Diamond Lake and Big Kandi Lake in 10 feet or less. On Willmar/Foot Lake, you'll find panfish during the day and walleyes at night along the shorelines. Minnows have been the best option for walleyes. Pheasant hunting is getting better now that the corn is coming out, duck numbers are limited, and archery kills have increased this week.

On Lake Minnewaska, walleyes are hitting a jig and minnow in 20 to 25 feet during the day. Areas worth noting include Priest Point, Starbuck Beach, and in front of the high school. The crank-bait bite at night has been slow to develop. Crank-baits are producing walleyes on Long Lake in eight to 10 feet and shallow-running Shad Raps are working on_Lake Emily in less than six feet. There's still a lot of corn in the area, which has limited pheasant hunting success and duck numbers remain poor.

A jig and minnow is producing walleyes in 15 to 22 feet on Lake Le Homme Dieu, Lake Carlos, and Lake Darling. A vertically-presented jig and minnow is turning walleyes in 30 to 60 feet on lakes Ida and Miltona. At night, there's a crank-bait bite close to shore. Look for suspended crappies in 14 to 20 feet on Lake Victoria and Lake Geneva. Waterfowl hunters are seeing more geese than ducks and pheasant hunting should improve as the corn is removed.
